Senior Series Preview

Thought I'd throw up a shot of what this piece looks like framed and with a second coat of varnish. The frame is one I had floating around, I think it works fairly well. I might try to darken it with a stain or something. Thoughts?

sketchbook experiment

Drew a fuax-bronzed bust by Steven Wang shown at the Chet Zar curated Conjoined in 3D show.
Acrylic primed, ballpoint pen (almost half the ink in one), metallic color pencils and sharpie.
The sketchbook didn't take kindly to all that abuse, thus the glare from the paper warping even though I was trying to force it flat against the scanner.

Bearded Jess

So this is what I made for our print swap in Silkscreen class at the end of the year.  The theme was "Circus".  I was super rushed and used the wrong print out for my first layer with a misspelling, didn't notice until I had pulled almost all of them.  I just have to accept that there's so many things that can go wrong in silkscreening that it's almost impossible to get something through without errors.  C'est la vie.

More Colored Pencil Adventures

Still occasionally fooling around in the recycled brown paper sketchbook, colored pencils and solvents.  Now I just can't bring this within ten feet of an open flame.

New Sketchpad!

Been breaking in the new sketchpad and pen I got as a gift from Jill Weber.  Great stuff from muji.net

Second Spread for Jack and the Beanstalk

Start to final in three sittings! 5B Pencil on bristol, colored in Photoshop. Pages 8 and 9 directly follow the previous spread I posted. Next up is the scene where Jack is running from the giant with the harp.

Edit: changed the light out the window to better match the light on the mom.

First Jack and the Bean Stalk Spread

Here's my first of three spreads for my Jack and the Beanstalk illustrations. I included the cleaned-up line work done on Strathmore bristol as well. Colored digitally with Photoshop and applied a few watercolor textures and gradients. I also did the text. Wish I had put in the background market scene that I wanted but I'm spread a bit thin between all my projects. Any feedback is welcome.

Screenprints and Painting progress.

I just did a color correction to my laptop screen and I can't believe what I was using before. Sorry for all the over saturated images, I'll throw up some corrections where needed.
Here are two of my recent screen prints.

Taco Hell Delivery Boy - 7 Layers 16 x 21

Spider Collage - CMYK print 17 x 29 (rough guess)

And lastly, here is where my oil painting is at in the series I'm working on that I'm considering calling "Why Aren't You Human?". To reiterate, the series is about depicting people in the midst of a sub-human action as the animals they most resemble. Unfortunately, progress has been painstaking slow so I'm putting this it aside until the spring. Then, I can have unobstructed attention to work out issues that I just don't know how to approach with the little working time presently available to me. 24 x 36

Here's my digital draft for my next screen print, max of 7 colors. Taco Hell Delivery Boy.
Still tweaking things, thoughts on colors/positioning etc.?

Artist Statement

Due to a very un-entertaining upbringing I had to rely heavily upon my imagination. I developed a compulsion to create what was lacking, to make my invisible friends and feelings visible. My work today emanates from a similar discontent, that reality has not dealt me a full hand. Some of my ideas are a critique of my surroundings, of the absurdities and squalor that have made themselves part of everyday life. My Other ideas work to build off of where this reality ends and my imagination merges to it, where nightmares and monsters are made manifest.
The work I do is not exclusively personal, I consider the communication of my ideas critical. The thought that I can show a viewer a glimpse of what I see is riveting, conveying an idea or feeling and connecting with the viewer on some level inspires me. The process of creating an image is equally enthralling. Having the ability to create and manipulate the illusion of space and light, while also conveying the complexities and subtleties of the human condition captivate me.
I am not yet committed to any specific media, however I find myself most comfortable with drawing materials such as graphite or charcoal. Working in oil paint is relatively new to me and I find it much more suitable for work I would consider finished as opposed to working exclusively with pencils. My approach to using such media is a blend of traditional techniques and my own experimentation, I'll use any vehicle to attain accurate and believable representation for my ideas.

sketchbook

Thought I'd throw up some sketchbook work to prove I haven't spent the entire summer away from art. The last image of this post is of my final drawing for my next painting in my series however I dumped a full cup of milk into my macbook which fried it and lost all my reference so it has been placed on the back burner indefinitely unless I can recover the hard drive.
